His screen writing and screen director credits include My Left Foot ([screenplay with Shane Connaughton, based on the novel of the same name by Christy Brown] Ireland/UK, 1989), for which he was nominated for an Oscar as best director; The Field ([based on the novel by John B. Keane] Ireland/UK, 1990); In the Name of the Father ([screenplay by Terry George, based on the autobiograhical Proved Innocent, by Gerry Conlon] Ireland/UK, 1993); The Boxer ([screenplay with Terry George] Ireland/UK, 1997); In America ([screenplay with Naomi Sheridan] Ireland/UK, 2002); and Get Rich or Die Tryin&squo; [starring 50 Cent] (USA, 2005).
He divides his time between Dublin and Los Angeles.
