George O’Brien was born in Lismore, Co Waterford.

His works include the memoirs The Village of Longing (Leamington Spa, Sixth Chamber Press / Dublin, The Lilliput Press, 1987); Dancehall Days (Sixth Chamber Press / The Lilliput Press, 1998); and Out of Our Minds (Belfast, The Blackstaff Press, 1998).
His other work includes Brien Friel (Dublin, Gill & Macmillan, 1989); Brian Friel: A Reference Guide (New York, G K Hall & Co, 1995); The Ireland Anthology [with Sean Dunne] Thomas Dunne Books, 1998); and Playing the Field: Irish Writers On Sport (Dublin, New Island Books, 2000).
He has has received the John Eddeyrn Hughes Prize and the Irish Book Awards Silver Medal for The Village of Longing, which ran to three editions.
He is currently Professor of English at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
