Alex Hijmans was born in Heemskerk in Holland In 1975.
He moved to Ireland when he was twenty years old and learned Irish as part of his degree in Celtic Studies, before spending a twelve year period in Galway working in various Irish-language media.
His main literary works to date have been written and published in Irish, and include the non-fiction title Favela (Cois Life 2009); the novel Aiséirí (Baile Átha Cliath, Cois Life, 2011); and the short story collection Gonta (Cois Life, 2012).
His play Aingilín toured Ireland in 2002.
He has translated a novel for teenagers, Maistín (Cló Iar-Chonnacht, 2001), from the Dutch of Peter Jan Rens.
He also writes in Dutch and English, and currently lives in Salvador, Brazil, where he works as an international correspondent.
