Moya Cannon was born in Dunfanaghy, Co Donegal, in 1956.

Her collections are Oar, for which she received The Brendan Behan Memorial Prize (Galway, Salmon Publishing, 1990); The Parchment Boat (Loughcrew, Co Meath, The Gallery Press, 1997); Carrying the Songs (Manchester, Carcanet Press, 2007); and Hands (Carcanet Press, 2011).
She was a recipient of the Laurence O Shaughnessy Award in 2001.
A number of her poems have been set to music by Jane O Leary, Philip Martin and Ellen Cranitch, and she has worked with traditional Irish musicians, amongst them Kathleen Loughnane and Maighread and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, both in the context of performance and of translating Gaelic songs.
She has been editor of The Poetry Ireland review and is a member of Aosdána. She lives in Galway.
